Short Story
A short story is a brief fictional prose narrative that is shorter than a novel and that
usually deals with only a few characters. They are usually concerned with a single effect
conveyed in only one or a few significant episodes or scenes. The form encourages economy of
setting and concise narrative; character is disclosed in action and dramatic encounter but
is seldom fully developed.
There are two types of short stories. One type is a realistic sketch in which the author
carefully records appearances and actions. The other type is one in which the details are
not taken from reality but from within a character’s mind.

Some of the best-known short stories are folk-tales such as Little Red Riding Hood or
The Three Little Pigs.
