These performances became so popular that they were performed outside of the Church where more people could watch. Soon, common people volunteered to act in them. By the end of the 12th Century the plays were no longer limited to religious themes. Special machines and costumes also developed to help create some special effects. Different plays and styles were experimented with well into the 16th Century. This production of "Hamlet" staring Jonathon Pryce and Jill Bennett, has a painted backdrop. [AL] {BR}
