INDEX NEXT UP LAST ATG Alexandre Dumas Senior Alexandre Dumas Senior

Richard III by Antony Sher Alexandre Dumas Senior (also called Dumas pere) was a well-known French novelist and playwright. Born July 24, 1802 in France, he lived to the age of 68. Dumas began writing plays in the 1820s. This was the beginning of the Romantic Period of French Literature, and it was reflected in the style of his works. Some of his best known plays are "Henri III et sa cour", "Napoleon Bonaparte", "Antony" and "Les Trois Mousquetaires" (The 3 Musketeers). Today these plays seem melodramatic and crude, but during the 19th Century, they were extremely popular. In this photograph "Richard III" is being performed. [AL] {EB}
