Sir John Mills, Chichester Festival William Congreve was born January 24, 1670. He was a well-known playwright during the Restoration Period of English Literature in the late 17th Century. Congreve made famous the style of the English Comedy of Manners, with humorous dialogue and satirical criticism of society. His first play, the immensely popular "The Old Bachelour" was written in 1693. Some of his other works include "Love for Love" (1695), and "The Mourning Bride" (his only tragedy) written in 1697. The actor and actress in this photograph are performing at the Chichester Festival. [AL] {EB}
