Spain
Sorry, No Picture! During the 1500s and 1600s Spanish theatre (as well as the other arts) flourished. In 1579, the first Spanish playhouse was built in Madrid. Spanish theatre incorporated many different styles. Aside from the main play comic sketches, musical interludes, ballads and dances were performed. Spain developed a passionate, romantic, almost poetic style of play, which joined comedy and tragedy as one. Two of Spain's great playwrights during this period were Lope de Vega and Pedro Calderon de la Barca. These flamenco dancers are celebrating in Spain. [AL] {EB}
