Moliere
ACTOR Jean-Baptiste Poquelin was born in January 1622 in Paris, to parents Jean Poquelin and Marie Cresse. He was taught at a Jesuit School called Clermont College. He became an actor with the "Illustre Theatre" of Paris in 1643, and assumed the stage name of Moliere in 1644. Moliere began writing plays on 1645, and his first popular works were "L'Etourdi" (1655) and "Le Depit Amoureux" (1656). He married Armande Bejart in 1662, but it was not a happy marriage for either of them. In 1664, Moliere produced his greatest work "Tartuffe". Before his death in 1673, Moliere wrote 16 other plays. This very well-known French playwright was recognized for his style of presenting serious themes in a humorous way. The actor in this photograph is Donald Sinden. [AL] {EB}
