Roman Architecture
TRAJAN'S COLUMN WITH CLOSE-UP

Roman citizens lived in apartment type buildings or small houses. Wealthier Romans had villas, which were larger homes with rich interiors.

Roman towns and cities had a large open space called a forum usually in the middle of the town site. Surrounding the forum would be a theater for cultural activities such as plays, dancing acrobatics and sports. The Coliseum, is a famous Roman theater.

Also found around the forum would be buildings used for court and government activities called a basilica.

The Romans also build grand temples to honor their Gods and Goddesses.

An important development of the Romans was the aqueducts. Aqueducts were large structures built to carry clean water to towns and cities. [SB] {HO}
