INDEX NEXT UP LAST ATG The Temple of Neptune The Temple of Neptune

The so-called Temple of Neptune (Poseidon) like the Basilica is also a temple built for the goddess Hera. The Temple of Neptune was constructed later around 475BC and shows the changing Greek architecture in the shape of the columns. [NS] {SW}
Special features of this temple are the interior supports of the cella ceiling, two rows of columns, each supporting a smaller set of columns in a way that makes the tapering seem continuous despite the architrave in between. Such a two-story interior became a practical necessity for the cellas of the larger Doric temples. [RA] {HI}
