Minoan Columns
The Minoan Column is seen on the Island of Crete.

The columns were always made out of wood.
Although none have survived (those in picture are reconstructed) their characteristic form,
the smooth shaft tapering downward and topped by a wide, cushion capital, is known from
representations in paintings and sculptures. About the origins of this type of column,
nothing can be said for sure, but some believe that in some contexts it could also serve as
a religious symbol, or it is possible that it could be linked with Egyptian architecture.
