Ionic Columns
The Ionic style is thinner and more elegant. It differs from the Doric not only in the body
but also in spirit. Its capital is decorated with a scroll-like design (a volute). This
style was used in eastern Greece and the islands.

The Ionic column is lighter and more
graceful than its mainland cousin. It lacks the latter’s muscular quality. Instead it evokes
a growing plant, something like a formalized palm tree. The columns origins show that it
travelled a slow and tortuous path by land from Egypt through Syria and Asia Minor to
Greece. MORE!
