Ionic Columns
The Ionic style is thinner and more elegant. It differs from the Doric not only in the body but also in spirit. Its capital is decorated with a scroll-like design (a volute). This style was used in eastern Greece and the islands. [MH] {AP}
The Ionic column is lighter and more graceful than its mainland cousin. It lacks the latter’s muscular quality. Instead it evokes a growing plant, something like a formalized palm tree. The columns origins show that it travelled a slow and tortuous path by land from Egypt through Syria and Asia Minor to Greece. MORE! [RA] {HI}
