INDEX NEXT UP LAST ATG The Basilica The Basilica

The so-called Basilica in Paestum, Italy is actually a temple built for the goddess Hera. Constructed around 550BC, the Basilica is a good example of early Greek architecture. The strongly curved and tapered pillars appear to be swelling under the strain holding up the heavy marble. Since the building is not nearly as high as it is wide or long the walls appear heavy and the pillars stubby. [MH] {AP}
