Gothic Cathedrals
Gothic cathedrals originated in France.
The floor plan of a Gothic cathedral was usually in the shape of a cross.
Pointed arches allowed the Cathedral to be built higher, thus giving worshippers a sense that prayers were soaring toward heaven.
Its added height also permitted the placement of large, stained glass windows, whose beautiful light symbolised the spirit of God and of Jesus.
